Public Prayer

Public prayer has been a much debated subject,
especially in public schools. This is where the opposing sides say
that it is should not be a practice for everyone.
They feel that as long as those who do not want to take part in public
prayer are not forced to do so, they won't object. A number of legal issues such as separation of church and state
as well as freedom of speech arose and are often discussed in relation to the issue of public prayer.

The questions of Christians praying in private is also a point of discussion. Those who argue against public prayer often point out Matthew 6:5-6 which states, “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love and pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men…when thou prayest, enter into the closet and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father.”
Those who oppose public prayer, especially like this verse and point it out to prove their point that prayer should be kept private. They argue that the bible explicitly condemns public prayer as being hypocritical
(which isn't what that passage refers to). On the other hand Christians are aware that this passage was
specifically meant to condemn hypocrisy rather than to condemn public prayer.
The scriptures show many biblical examples where Jesus is praying with others. It is through these references that Christians receive their confirmation of the power of public prayer. In these examples, Jesus reached out to those around
him to embrace them in prayer. Prayer in public for the purpose of being noticed
and making sure that others notice your prayer is hypocrisy (this is what the
bible refers to) while prayer in public that is offered with sincerity and
without pretension can be extremely powerful.

TODAY'S NEWS:
'No Religion' Billboard Taken Down After Complaints
Throngs of mourners on Tuesday packed the funerals of the six Jews killed in the 60-hour terror rampage in the Indian city of Mumbai, a grim occasion deepened by the conviction that the victims were targeted because of their religion.
RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) _ Muslims from the Middle East to Britain and Austria condemned Sunday the Mumbai shooting rampage by suspected Islamic militants as senseless terrorism, but also found themselves on the defensive once again about bloodshed linked to their religion.

Even though the freedom of speech argument is often made by Christians who are seeking the rights for students to pray in school, the reasoning behind their passion for the subject is not related to political interpretation or constitutional rights
while Christians understand the value of public prayer.
Every Sunday, Christians around the globe gather together to worship and unite in prayer.
The sincere prayer of an individual is powerful in itself but there is
nothing that comes close to prayer when one is in fellowship with other
Christians.
